As Peace through Health (PtH) has developed as a field, students have played an important role in developing theories, interpreting them in the classroom and field, and contributing to research, education, and projects. This chapter offers an overview of student involvement in PtH, the challenges that may be encountered, and the rationale for increased engagement of students based on their special characteristics.Caecilie Buhmann & Andrew D. Bureaucratizing Medicine: Creating a Gender Identity Clinic in the Welfare State.Ketil Slagstad - 2022 - Isis 113 (3):469-490.
This essay considers the creation of a gender identity clinic at Rikshospitalet, the National Hospital of Norway, in the early 2000s and its implications for the production of medical knowledge during that era. In the preceding decades, medical transition was overseen by an informal, self-organized, multidisciplinary team of medical experts, but this situation changed when a centralized gender identity clinic was established under psychiatric control. The essay argues that shifting institutional, societal, economic, legal, and bureaucratic circumstances redistributed expertise and authority (...)

Black Metal Bildung.Ketil Thorgersen & Thomas von Wachenfeldt - 2022 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 30 (2):183-201.
Abstract:This article is based on results from research that addressed the ways young Black Metal musicians construct their musical learning and socialization. In this article we will focus on one of the strands in that study; a trace of a classic ideal from Bildung theory. Using Bildung theory, we explore similarities between the ideals and concepts in the expressed informal music education from Black Metal musicians and contemporary institutionalized music education. In this article the German and Nordic 18th century concept (...)

  8. Explaining Social Systems without Humans.P. M. Hejl - 2015 - Constructivist Foundations 10 (2):189-192.
Open peer commentary on the article “The Autopoiesis of Social Systems and its Criticisms” by Hugo Cadenas & Marcelo Arnold. Upshot: I argue in favor of not eliminating humans from social theory. My argumentation is based on the “mechanistic” perspective that emerged in the interdisciplinary context of systems theory but that is lacking in Luhmann’s work. Based on defining communication in the constructivist-mechanist tradition, I claim that research on human universals contributes to solving the constructivist problem of how understanding among (...)

The Individual in Radical Constructivism. Some Critical Remarks from an Evolutionary Perspective.P. Hejl - 2011 - Constructivist Foundations 6 (2):227-234.
Context: Ernst von Glasersfeld’s radical constructivism (RC) develops two positions that are, for the founder of RC, necessarily linked: (1) all accessible realities are perceived realities, (2) perceived realities are “constructed” by “individuals.” Purpose: Von Glasersfeld refers quite often to the theory of evolution. Despite this frequent referring, he uses an evolutionary approach primarily when discussing the viability of constructs. Furthermore, although this use of evolutionary thinking is already restricted, it plays an even smaller part in the reception of RC. (...)

Culture Blind Leadership Research: How Semantically Determined Survey Data May Fail to Detect Cultural Differences.Jan Ketil Arnulf & Kai R. Larsen - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11:487924.
Likert-scale surveys are frequently used in cross-cultural studies on leadership. Recent publications using digital text algorithms raise doubt about the source of variation in statistics from such studies to the extent that they are semantically driven. The Semantic Theory of Survey Response (STSR) predicts that in the case of semantically determined answers, the response patterns may also be predictable across languages. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) was applied to 11 different ethnic samples in English, Norwegian, German, Urdu and Chinese. Semantic (...)

Religiousness in First-Episode Psychosis.Hilde Hanevik, Knut A. Hestad, Lars Lien, Inge Joa, Tor Ketil Larsen & Lars Johan Danbolt - 2017 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 39 (2):139-164.
_ Source: _Volume 39, Issue 2, pp 139 - 164 The aim of the present study is to explore the significance of religiousness for patients suffering from first-episode psychosis. Our study is a thematic analysis. The study illustrates how the patients understood their hallucinations as mystical experiences. Even so, many of the patients describe their religiousness to be helpful in coping with their disorder, giving meaning to life as well as a relationship to a sacred figure. However, their religiousness often (...)
